12 SANDF Members Accused of Murder Granted Bail

Twelve members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), among them elite Special Task Force operatives, were granted bail of R10,000 each by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday. This decision comes despite the group facing serious charges, including murder, kidnapping, fraud, and obstruction of justice.

The case stems from the December 2022 disappearance of Ethiopian businessman Abdella Hussain Abadiga and his bodyguard, who were allegedly abducted at the Mall of Africa in Midrand. The charges also cover the August 2023 killing of Hawks investigator, Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, who was heading the investigation into the abduction.

Authorities arrested the suspects in June 2025 after an extended probe by the Hawks and intelligence agencies. Their bail applications faced multiple delays while the court verified their home addresses.

Prosecution to Appeal Bail Decision

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has voiced strong opposition to the bail ruling and intends to appeal the decision. The NPA cited the suspects’ advanced military skills, access to weapons, and the violent nature of the allegations as reasons they pose a major public safety threat.

According to an affidavit from the lead investigator, the accused may attempt to intimidate witnesses or flee the country.

“These are not ordinary citizens,” a prosecutor said in court. “They have tactical training and have already shown a capacity for violence and evasion.”

Defense attorneys countered that the evidence against their clients is weak and that the men had been fully cooperative during their arrest and court proceedings. They emphasized that none of the accused had criminal records and were not a flight risk.

The court agreed with the defense, allowing bail under strict conditions, such as the surrender of passports and mandatory weekly check-ins at local police stations.

The case has been postponed for pre-trial procedures as the NPA prepares its appeal for a higher court.

Meanwhile, families of the victims remain steadfast in their demand for justice. “We are watching closely,” said a relative of Colonel Mathipa outside the courtroom. “These men must be held accountable, regardless of their status.”
