Johannesburg Mayor Survives, Speaker Ousted
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero successfully survived a motion of no confidence, while the council speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu, was removed from her position. The outcomes of these votes reflect the ongoing political tensions within the city’s coalition government.
During the session, 144 councillors voted against the motion to oust Morero, while 75 supported it, and 43 abstained. The motion against Morero was spearheaded by the Democratic Alliance (DA), which has been critical of his leadership, citing a decline in basic services and governance issues. DA caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku stated, “No amount of spin by a failing executive can conceal Johannesburg’s rot and decay,” emphasizing the party’s concerns about the current administration.
In contrast, the motion against Mthembu saw a decisive vote, with 212 councillors in favor of her removal and only 48 against. This motion was brought forth by Al Jamah-ah, a coalition partner, highlighting the fractures within the governing alliance.
The African National Congress (ANC), which forms a significant part of the coalition, had previously indicated its intention to support Morero. ANC regional task team coordinator Sasabone Manganyi noted that the party’s numbers in the council would ensure his survival. “We believe in stability and continuity in leadership during these challenging times,” Manganyi remarked.
ActionSA, another coalition partner, chose to abstain from the vote against Morero, a decision that has drawn scrutiny. Provincial chair Funzi Ngobeni explained, “Our abstention was strategic, aimed at maintaining our position within the coalition while avoiding further conflict.” This decision reflects the complex politics at play within the coalition government.
The city has faced significant challenges, including deteriorating infrastructure and service outages, which have fueled discontent among residents.
The outcomes of today’s votes signal both a temporary reprieve for Mayor Morero and a shift in the dynamics of the city’s coalition government, particularly with the ousting of Speaker Mthembu.
