Public Urged to Help Find Missing Retired SABC Editor Manas Tshungu

Gauteng police are appealing to the public for assistance in locating Phaki Manas Tshungu, a 69-year-old retired news manager and former political reporter for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), who has been reported missing.

Tshungu was last seen on Monday morning after leaving his home in Atteridgeville and has not returned since. His family has expressed deep concern for his safety, stating that they have searched the neighborhood without success. “We are extremely worried about his well-being, especially with the cold weather,” said his wife. “He has never been gone for this long without contacting us.”

A missing person’s case was officially opened at the local police station on Wednesday. According to a family member, “He was last seen by the family’s helper walking out, and all attempts to call his phone have proved unsuccessful as it only rang until it sounded off later the same day.”

Tshungu’s career at SABC spanned several decades, during which he made significant contributions to journalism, particularly as a political reporter. He retired as a regional editor for the SABC’s Limpopo office in 2013, having joined the public broadcaster in 1983. His work has left a lasting impact on the community, and many remember him for his dedication to independent and impartial reporting.

The police are actively investigating the case and have urged anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward. “We are doing everything we can to locate Mr. Tshungu and ensure his safe return,” said a representative from the local police department, who requested to remain anonymous. They can be contacted at the Atteridgeville Branch Commander at 079 891 4196 or the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111.

Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information that could assist in locating the retired editor. Additionally, local residents are invited to join search efforts or share information on social media to help spread the word.

The family remains hopeful for his safe return, reflecting on a previous incident where he went missing for three days but returned without any recollection of the events that led to his disappearance. “We just want him home,” his wife added.
