Major-General Dumisani Khumalo Arrested in Corruption Investigation
The head of police crime intelligence Major-General Dumisani Khumalo has been arrested in connection with a corruption investigation involving luxury property purchases totaling R45 million.
The arrest took place at OR Tambo International Airport on June 26, 2025, following an extensive probe by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate.
Khumalo is accused of authorizing the purchase of two high-value properties without the necessary ministerial approval. The properties in question include a luxury boutique hotel valued at R22.7 million in Pretoria North and a commercial building worth R22.8 million in Berea, Durban.
The investigation into Khumalo’s dealings has also implicated Major-General Philani Lushaba, the Chief Financial Officer of SAPS Crime Intelligence, who has reportedly gone missing amid the inquiry. The Investigating Directorate has indicated that both officials played key roles in the unauthorized transactions.
National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, confirmed Khumalo’s arrest, stating, “I also picked it up now from the provincial commissioner of Gauteng. He just told me that he [Khumalo] has been arrested by ID. That’s all I can say. What for? I don’t know.”
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the policing community, with Ian Cameron, chairperson of parliament’s portfolio committee on police, expressing deep concern over the integrity crisis within SAPS senior management. He called for urgent audits and reviews to restore public trust in law enforcement.
