DA Issues Ramaphosa a 48-Hour Ultimatum

Democratic Alliance (DA) has issued President Cyril Ramaphosa a 48-hour ultimatum to dismiss several “compromised” ministers from his cabinet. This demand follows the recent dismissal of DA Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield, who was removed from his position for allegedly taking an unauthorized trip to the United States.

DA leader John Steenhuisen has publicly criticized President Ramaphosa’s decision to fire Whitfield, describing it as a “calculated assault on the DA.” Steenhuisen argues that the president’s actions undermine the fight against corruption and send a troubling message about the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. He emphasized that Whitfield was dismissed for “fighting corruption, not committing corruption,” warning that this could be one of the greatest political mistakes in South African history.

The DA has specifically called for the removal of Ministers Simelane, Nkabane, and Mahlobo, citing their alleged involvement in corrupt activities. Steenhuisen pointed out that while Whitfield was summarily dismissed, other ministers implicated in scandals have not faced similar consequences, highlighting a perceived double standard in the administration’s approach to accountability.

Spokesperson for President Ramaphosa stated that the government remains committed to addressing corruption and that all allegations are taken seriously. However, the spokesperson did not indicate whether the president would comply with the DA’s ultimatum.

Political analysts suggest that the outcome of this situation could have significant implications for the ruling party’s credibility and its relationship with opposition parties. A political analyst at the University of Johannesburg, noted, “The DA’s ultimatum puts pressure on Ramaphosa to act, but it also risks further polarizing the political discourse.”

All eyes will be on the president to see how he responds to the DA’s demands as the deadline looms and whether he will take steps to address the concerns surrounding his cabinet.
